Holotropic Breathwork is approached here as an opportunity for self-exploration, reflection and personal meaning. People bring different backgrounds and intentions, and no particular experience or outcome can be promised.

Observations are not guarantees

The original article includes Grof’s personal reports of changes following sessions. It also explicitly acknowledges that he had not tested this method in the same controlled, systematically followed-up way as his earlier psychedelic research. Those reports should not be turned into claims that workshops cure illnesses.

Theory, experience and evidence

A theoretical explanation can offer a way of thinking about an experience. It is different from evidence that a specific intervention is effective for a medical condition. Personal accounts can be meaningful without establishing a diagnosis, a cause or a treatment effect.

Making an informed choice

The Grofs’ principles of practice call for preparation, discussion of physical and emotional contraindications, and expert assessment when there are concerns. A conversation with the facilitator is an important part of considering participation.

Workshop information is not a substitute for individual medical or mental-health advice. Bring questions about your circumstances to the facilitator and an appropriately qualified health professional.

Space for your own meaning

The approach places importance on the participant’s own understanding. Integration offers time for that understanding to unfold, without pressure to adopt a particular explanation. Read more about mandala drawing and integration.
